The Harbor at Renaissance of Annandale to Improve Resident Sleep-Wake Behaviors with Lighting Technology

Fairfax County’s new state-of-the-art Alzheimer’s and memory care facility uses circadian LED lighting therapy to simulate a natural daylight environment.

ANNANDALE, Va. (Jan. 25, 2019) – The Harbor at Renaissance of Annandale will offer a purpose-designed circadian rhythm LED lighting system to improve the sleep-wake patterns of its residents when this premier memory care facility opens in early 2019.

The circadian rhythmic LED lighting system simulates morning’s sunrise, afternoon’s warmth and evening’s glow by carefully illuminating specific shades of light throughout the facility. Several controlled studies have shown senior sleeping behaviors and alertness improve under exposure to natural daylight conditions.

A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease reported persons suffering from Alzheimer’s and related memory disorders experienced more sleep disruptions and nocturnal wandering when they did not benefit from natural light or color levels. Patients diagnosed with mild to moderate memory loss disorders have an increased tendency to fall asleep during the day and remained wakeful at night.

“The benefit of the soft circadian lighting, combined with our calming wall colors, is the soothing effect it creates for our residents,” said Pamela Phillips, executive director of Renaissance of Annandale.

By investing in circadian lighting technology, The Harbor at Renaissance of Annandale provides its residents with a non-medication therapy alternative to powerful medications to manage their sleeping behaviors and improve their quality of life. The circadian lighting system is rarely utilized in memory care communities in the southeastern United States.
