Residents Live ‘Purposeful Day’ at The Harbor at Renaissance of Annandale

Fairfax County’s new state-of-the-art Alzheimer’s and memory care facility uses non-medication therapies based on resident histories, desires and needs.

ANNANDALE, Va. (Feb. 6, 2019) – The Harbor at Renaissance of Annandale will provide residents with “A Purposeful Day” in which they engage in tasks and hobbies tailored to their interests and needs when this premier memory care facility opens in early 2019.

The caring staff of The Harbor at Renaissance of Annandale recognizes each resident is different and develops special service plans based on their personal histories, current desires and individual requirements. The Purposeful Day is designed to help residents suffering from Alzheimer’s and other memory-related disorders better cope with those challenges.

Resident service plans incorporate several non-medication therapies as integral parts of their Purposeful Day, including reminiscence therapy, trusted voice therapy, time and place therapy and music therapy.

Purposeful Day examples include the homemaker, who helps set the table at meal times and folds the linen when it comes out the dryer; the gardener, who helps plant flowers in the courtyard; and the accountant, who works with a calculator, paper and pen.

“Our mission is to provide each of our residents a ‘Purposeful Day.’ We do this by knowing what each resident has done in the past for hobbies, their occupations or their favorite pastimes. We believe it is important to give each resident purpose and help them succeed in that purpose, resulting in praise and gratification for their assistance and good work,” said Pamela Phillips, executive director of Renaissance of Annandale.
